Having worked in law for thirty years, I never imagined I’d ever paint before 2015. In 2014, I retired from my job. Suddenly, with less work to do, I often made tea for my husband, Tian Ye, and his artist friends in his studio, listening to their conversations about art. I also often accompanied Tian Ye to exhibitions. Perhaps this influence was subtle, but one day in early 2015, I quite by chance picked up a brush and created my first, very small, painting that could truly be called a “painting.” My artistic friends praised me greatly and encouraged me, inspiring me to embark on my “painting career.”

Having developed a love for painting, I became more conscious of viewing and reading about art, including works by renowned Chinese and international figures. My favorite is Chagall, whom I’ve seen countless times. I find his paintings free, romantic, and full of love. Chagall once said that everything stems from love, and I paint for love. From 2015 to now, I’ve created hundreds of paintings, and “New Year’s Day” is one of them. I created it in 2023.
